I went into this one with an open mind and while I’m glad I saw it, I felt it was a bit of a mess also. I thought there was a lot of unnecessary sound and fury, and not quite enough heart like the first film had. With Gods involved, I’m not sure we needed all the “extra” baddies this movie (and computers) generated. Maybe a better sequel would have been simply about the family learning to harness and control their new-found powers, with a “big bad” awaiting them at the end while still uncertain how they’d work together being new to their individual abilities.
I couldn’t agree more, I wonder if the film was originally planning on more of a low key villain before The Rock started throwing his weight around. It definitely could have done with more of that earnestness that the original brought but I guess the temptation to go bigger was too much for them. A shame really as I genuinely do enjoy the first as a nice little Christmas mess about.
